Credit unions are non-profit, membership organizations.  The earliest ones had employees of, for example, the University of South Carolina, sign up as members of the credit union.  Employees could get a loan for a car and put their money into a savings account.  Later, the law changed, and many credit unions opened up membership to all people in a geographic area.  Lots of changes.  Jim will tell us all about this.
