Dr. Richard L. Goodwin, an Associate Professor in the Cell Biology and Anatomy Department at the USC School of Medicine, told us that we’re just in the formative stage in growing organs that can, for example, replace the liver or kidney or even a valve in the heart. Instead of transplants, which can cause rejection by the body, it is better to “grow your own” organs that are compatible with your genetic structure. This is the future, but it is unlikely that we’ll see this in our lifetime (unless you’re really young, like Olivia’s baby Andrew). (Photo by Brian Colclough)
