Fifty-nine years ago, the Rotary Club of Columbia presented this inscribed cast bronze bell to the Rotary Club of Five Points (Columbia). The Rotary Club of Columbia sponsored the charter of our club in 1954. Five Points Club President Charlie (Foster) accepted the bell from Columbia Club President David (Ellison) and rang it for the first time at the conclusion of the meeting. In 1954, the U.S. President was Dwight Eisenhower. George Bell Timmerman was the SC Governor. Marilyn Monroe married Joe DeMaggio. The Cordettes had a hit song, “Mr. Sandman (bring me a dream)”. The Gamecocks finished 6-4 in the ACC under Coach Enright. President Andrew (Folks) was not even a twinkle in his father’s eye.
