April 19, 2024 Meeting to be held at SCETV

This Friday, April 19, 2024 at 1:00PM, we will meet in the BOA Room at ETV for lunch followed by a tour of ETV. The address is 1041 George Rogers Blvd. If you are planning to attend & have not signed up, please email President Wade so he can get an accurate head count for lunches.

The next meeting of the Rotary Club of Five Points will be at 1:00 PM, Friday, April 12, 2024, at the Hilton Garden Inn (corner of Pickens and Gervais).  The Speaker will be Craig Currey, CEO of Transitions.  We will also be inducting a new E-Member, Nicole Rodrigues dos Santos.

March 22, 2024 Meeting at USC Band Hall

We will NOT be meeting at the HGI this Friday. Instead, we will be meeting at the Copenhaver Band Hall at 324 Sumter Street. Our speaker will be Dr. Cormac Cannon, who is the Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at USC. If you have not signed up to attend, please email Wade (wadesparks1966@outlook.com ) so that he will have an accurate head count for lunches.

The Rotary Club of Five Points was well represented at the Five Points St. Patrick’s Day Parade last Saturday. Thank you to everyone who coordinated and participated in the float decoration Friday night & the Parade on Saturday. Pictures are being posted on our social media pages.

Float Decorating Social- Friday, March 15, 2024

We will NOT have our regular meeting at HGI this Friday. Instead we will have a social & float decorating at the Anchor Investment Management office this Friday at 4:30. The Anchor office is located at 3205 Devine Street and you can enter the parking lot off Devine Street or Bellwood Road. We will also meet there between 9:00-9:30 on Saturday morning for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. We will NOT meet at Troy Robert’s State Farm office this Saturday morning. Our float lineup number is 45 which should be at the corner of Devine Street & Chatham Avenue. Our Leprechaun Contest winners are Lauren & Michael Duck. We raised $107 with all proceeds going to the Cart Fund. Thank you to Sara, Teri & David Wheeler for coordinating the float decorating, entering the float in the Parade & the Leprechaun Contest!

Next Club Meeting March 8, 2024 at the HGI

The next meeting of the Rotary Club of Five Points will be at 1:00 PM, Friday, March 8, 2024, at the Hilton Garden Inn (corner of Pickens and Gervais). Our own John Tjaarda will speak to us on seasonal birds. This will also be the last meeting to vote for the Leprechaun contest. At last count, Michael & Lauren Duck are leading with Buddy Wier in 3rd place. All proceeds go to The CART Fund so please vote early & often! If you are not able to attend this Friday & want to vote, please contact President Wade or Teri as soon as possible.

Past Club Meeting – November 10, 2023

The next meeting of the Rotary Club of Five Points will be at 1:00 PM, Friday, November 10, 2023, at the Hilton Garden Inn (corner of Pickens and Gervais).

Our speaker will be Eric Davis.  He will be speaking about the EarlyAct Club. EarlyAct is a school-wide service club for elementary students from ages 5 to 13. It is sponsored by one of the local Rotary clubs in the township in which the school is located. The mission and operation of Early Act are closely linked to the ideals of Rotary and provide a foundation and natural succession into Interact.

 

 

Social on Tuesday 10/24 in lieu of meeting this week

As a reminder, we will not be meeting this Friday due to our joint Social with Capital Rotary Club on Tuesday the 24th from 4:30-6:30. For everyone who goes to Iron Hill Brewery on 10/24 and orders food (dine-in or take-out), Iron Hill will donate 20% of their total food bill to The Rotary Foundation when they show a printed or digital copy of a special flyer!  Here is a link to a PDF version. These flyers cannot be given out at the restaurant, so please send them to as many people as possible before the Social. Oct. 20, 2023 Meeting – Quorum Needed for Bylaw Changes

The next meeting of the Rotary Club of Five Points will be at 1:00 PM, Friday, October 20, 2023, at the Hilton Garden Inn (corner of Pickens and Gervais).

Our speaker will be Matt Perron with Riverbanks Zoo.  As a reminder, we will be voting on our updated Bylaws this Friday. It has been 10+ years since our Bylaws have been updated so this is a very important meeting & vote.

We need an in person quorum so please make every effort to attend this Friday.

Rotary District Governor to Visit Club on August 4, 2023

The next meeting of the Rotary Club of Five Points will be at 1:00 PM, Friday, August 4, 2023, at the Hilton Garden Inn (corner of Pickens and Gervais).

This Friday we will host Rotary District 7770 Governor Lou Mello so let’s have a big turnout. There will be a brief Board Meeting following our meeting.

We had a great time and turnout last Thursday for our Social at Arabesque. Thank you again to Teri & Sara for coordinating! We still have a couple of USC football games that need Captains. September 23rd vs. Mississippi State & the Clemson game on November 25th are still open. Please consider signing up as a Captain or to park at a game or two or both! The sign up sheet is on our website. This season LE, Frank & Gus have agreed to serve as judges in our season long competition for best tailgate meal & signature cocktail. We will have awards at the end of the season for the winners.

Lastly, this Thursday, August 3rd, our Club turns 69 years old.

Club Social on Thursday, July 27, 2023. No regular meeting this week.

We will have a social in lieu of our normal meeting this week. The Social this week has been changed from Friday the 28th to Thursday the 27th and will be at Arabesque, 2930 Devine Street from 5:00-6:30. A big shout out to Teri & Sara for coordinating! Also, please note that Board voted last Friday to charge R-85 members and all guests for all upcoming Socials. The charge will vary depending on the cost of the Socials and next Thursday will be $10.00. All non R-85 members will remain free of charge. In additional to charging for Socials, the Board voted on several items as we head into the new Rotary year and these are listed below. As discussed at the Club Assembly, the Club has to make some adjustments to keep us on a solid financial footing for the future.

• Quarterly dues will increase from $60.00 to $75.00. It has been well over 10 years since our last dues increase.
• Service fees for electronic payments on quarterly dues will now be passed along to the club members. These will be in then 3% range. In the past the club absorbed these fees.

Lastly, we have some changes to our Parking Project. Robert Lentz is stepping away as Captain for the parking project but will remain on the Parking Committee. Jill Michels will now serve as Captain so please direct any parking related questions to Jill. This change is in place now. Thank you to Jill & Robert for their service!

Next Meeting July 14, 2023 at Hilton Garden Inn

The next meeting of the Rotary Club of Five Points will be at 1:00 PM, Friday July 14, 2023, at the Hilton Garden Inn (corner of Pickens and Gervais).

This meeting is the first to be presided over by Wade Sparks, Club President for the 2023-24 Rotary year.

Our speaker will be Cindy Huang.  She will speak on the topic of Mental Awareness.

Cassie Radford Wins Moody Award

On June 16, 2023, Cassie Radford, an investigator with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department was named the first annual winner of the Nancy Moody Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement. The award is sponsored by the Five Points Rotary Club and is named in honor of Nancy Moody, a long-time member of the club.  Nancy was a past president of the Club and a former Rotary District Governor.  She also worked as an Associate Probate Judge and with the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s office.

MS. Radford was chosen for her Many years of excellent service with the Sherriff’s office and her work as a K-9 handler for an electronics detection dog.  The award also included a $500 contribution to the RCSD Foundation and will be spent on the needs of the RCSD K-9 services.

June 16, 2023 Meeting Honors Nancy Moody

We are meeting this week at 1:00 pm at the Hilton Garden Inn.

We have a special program this week honoring a Richland County Law Enforcement Officer in honor of Nancy Moody.  We will have a number of special guests including Sheriff Leon Lott and Probate Judge Amy McCulloch, and friends and family of Nancy.

Randy Folks will be giving his member moment.

It’s not too early to sign up for parking – more details in the bulletin.

Remember that through the Parking Project we were able to give over $173,000 to charitable causes last year.  Your involvement matters.

March 17, 2023 Social- Koger Ctr./USC School of Music

The Rotary Club of Five Points will have a social in lieu of meeting on Friday, March 17, 2023.

We are having a social/field trip this week to the USC School of Music and Koger Center. Please note the schedule below, as some times have changed.

• 12:30-1:00 pm, Concert in the Recital Hall, 2nd floor of the School of Music building at 813 Assembly St. Please arrive by 12:25 if you can.
• 1:05 pm, Lunch in the Donor Room, on the second floor of the Koger Center (next door)
• 1:15, Brief welcome and introduction to the Koger center by Executive Director Nate Terracio, with backstage tour.

There is street parking at parking meters or you can park in one of the nearby garages for a fee. Please note that classes are in session as normal this week (Spring Break was last week).

March 10th Meeting- Midlands Technical College NE Campus

We are having a field trip this week to the Midlands Tech Northeast campus, 151 Powell Road, Columbia 29203, directly across from the Spur at Northwoods Golf Club.

When entering the Northeast campus, parking will be on the left side. After parking, go through the main glass doors to the Conference room.

Our meeting will start promptly at 1:00 pm, followed by a short tour. Lunch is being provided by Midlands Tech. Big thanks to Robert Lentz for arranging this meeting.

 

March 3, 2023 Meeting at the Girl Scout Leadership Center

Fellow Five Points Rotarians,

We are meeting this week at 1:00 pm at the Girl Scout Center, 1107 Williams St.

Architect Derek Gruner (and a former member of this club) will be speaking to us about USC buildings and growth.  We also will be enjoying a Member Moment from Frank Kendrick.

Lunch will be catered by Palmetto Pig Barbecue.

Rotary Meeting 02/24/23

We are meeting this week at 1:00 pm at the Hilton Garden Inn, at the corner of Pickens and Gervais.  Please note that our meal price has increased to $15.

Our speaker this week is David Williams from The Big Red Barn Retreat, which provides help to veterans and first responders.

We will be enjoying a Member Moment from Teri Callen.

We are also inducting two new members: Sara Caudle and past president David Keller.

Meeting on 2/10/23 at Girl Scout Leadership Center

We are meeting this week at 1:00 pm at the Girl Scout Center, 1107 Williams St., for a special field trip meeting about the Congaree River Remediation Project.

President Olivia is out of town this Friday, and past president Mary Gasque will be presiding. We also will be enjoying a Member Moment from Patty Cavanaugh.

We will be meeting at the Girl Scout Center because of its close proximity to the Congaree River. We will not be in the room we’ve used in the past; instead we will be in the Boardroom.

  • There will be a presentation first, then the optional tour. We will walk from the Girl Scout Center to the Congaree remediation site at the end of Senate Street.
  • Do not wear open toed shoes. We will be walking on rock and maybe dirt/mud. Boots or tennis shoes would be fine.
  • No hardhats or safety glasses will be required
  • Tour will last as long as people have questions
  • We will not walk on the coffer dam

Boxed lunches and bottled water will be provided by the Gourmet Shop in Five Points. You must RSVP by noon tomorrow (2/7) for your boxed lunch. Will Folks of FITS News fame will be our speaker on Friday, January 20, 2023.  The Meeting will be held at our new home- The Hilton Garden Inn, 1200 Pickens St. (Corner Pickens and Gervais).  The program starts at 1:00 PM but come 20 minutes early to eat and socialize.

January 13, 2022 Meeting at SC ETV

Our January 13, 2022 meeting will be held at a familiar location- The SC ETV Building, 1041 George Rogers Boulevard.  Our Speaker will be local author, coin collector, and historian Dr. Anthony Chibbaro, who will discuss Banknotes of South Carolina.

Come a little early to socialize and eat before the program.

Meeting on January 6, 2023 at the Girl Scout Leadership Center

On January 6, 2022, we will be meeting at the Cathy Novinger Girl Scout Leadership Center, located at the intersection of Williams and Senate Streets (1107 Williams St, Columbia SC 29201). This is near the corner of Huger and Gervais. From Huger, turn West onto Senate Street. You will see the Girl Scout Leadership Center on your right. Park anywhere, on Senate or Williams streets. Come into the main door, turn left and come in the first door on the left.

Our speaker will be Carl Blackstone, director of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, who will give a Chamber update.

 

 

 

 

 

October 7, 2022 Meeting at Saluda Riverwalk Park (Please RSVP)

On Oct 7, 2022, club members will arrive, between 12:30 and 1 pm, to get a box lunch, view, and walk the trail at Saluda Riverwalk Park.  Mike Dawson will greet you at the head of the trail at the upper parking area.  Please RSVP for boxed lunch by clicking on THIS LINK by Tuesday October 5, 2022.  No need to RSVP if you do not desire boxed lunch but just want to walk.

This is an ADA approved walk, for those using walkers, canes, or wheelchairs. The beautiful trail to Boyd Island is about 1.5 miles each way.

Directions:  From I-126, take the Riverbanks Zoo exit. As you drive toward a left turn to the Zoo, turn right on Candi Lane. Go over the railroad tracks. There, at 650 Candi Lane, Columbia SC 29210, turn left into the upper parking area. If that lot is full, return to the road and turn left to the lower parking area.
