Honorable Robert L. Sumwalt, Member Robert L. Sumwalt, III (born c. 1950s) is an American airplane pilot and safety specialist. Currently he is vice Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board.

Sumwalt graduated the University of South Carolina and worked as a pilot for Piedmont Airlines and US Airways.. After his flying career he conducted aviation safety research as a consultant to NASA. He also worked for the US Airways Safety Department and was involved in the development of several airline safety programs.
