Five Points Rotary is 60 Years Old this August – Happy Birthday to us!

Happy Birthday to the Five Points (Columbia) Rotary Club, chartered on August 3, 1954 by Rotary International!  If there are any living members from that date, let them come forward, en masse, and light up the candles. They can also bring the cake (chocolate, please) and ice cream (vanilla) too. Nothing is too good for Five Points.

Many of us remember one of the members in 1954, Charlie Foster, who just happens to have been our first president.  Charlie taught us a few things.  One is that when you introduce yourself or when you introduce a speaker or a new member, you must say the name three times. That helps cement that name into our brains.  He also taught us that when we are standing in line or just standing around (translate that as “hanging out” – an expression Charlie would say has negative connotations, definitely not Rotarian-like), we should introduce ourselves to those around us, whether we know them or not, and ask for their card.  He said that if we give out our name, the other person will give us their name back.  Always, give your name back after you get the name of the other person. That’s the Charlie Foster rule.

The other thing that Charlie would ask is “What does this expression ‘Light up, Rotary’ mean anyway?”  Should we all light up Cuban cigars and puff?   Or does this refer to lighting up something else?  Now DG Williamson did bring a candle when he visited us.  Matthew 5:15 says “Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.” Confucius says “ It is better to light a single candle than to sit and curse the darkness.” The Torah says that Sarah, Abraham’s wife, lit the Shabbat lamp, as did RebeccaRachel and Leah for the meals so that all could see the food for which they were thankful.  Sounds like Abraham, Matthew and Confucius knew each other and went to the same school.  Let’s light a candle in a candlestick before we start the meeting each week, before the prayer, to light up Rotary.

Our bell which sits on the podium each week was first rung by Charlie at our first meeting that August. The bell was a gift from the Columbia Rotary Club, which sponsored the Five Points Rotary Club. The President of the Columbia Rotary Club was David Ellison. Thanks, Dave!
